 Girardville AOH to Dedicate Monument for Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient – Patrick Monaghan

 

Girardville, PA – The Girardville AOH John Kehoe Division 1 will dedicate a Monument for Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient Patrick Monaghan on Saturday, June 12, at 12 noon. A procession will commence at 11 AM from the American Legion on Main Street in Girardville leading to Saint Joseph’s Cemetery on Mahanoy Avenue for the 12 noon ceremony. Monaghan was born in Ireland and was a member of the 48th Infantry (1st Defenders) from Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Monaghan received his citation on December 1, 1864, for the recapture of the colors of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery. Following his discharge, Monaghan served as a schoolteacher and superintendent of Girardville Public Schools from 1873 to 1916. Patrick Monaghan died in 1917 at the age of 74.

 

Guest speaker for the event will be Raymond Johnson from the Medal of Honor Society in Ohio. Following the unveiling of the monument, refreshments will be available for participants at the nearby Hibernian House on Beech Street.
